EPROM – Drone Warfare EP [1985 Music]

Sometimes a new genre or subgenre comes to prominence and it just feels like it was made for an existing artist to slot themselves into, and that couldn’t be more the case when it comes to EPROM and the new wonky, halftime, “20/20” sound that has been emanating from some corners of the D&B scene in recent times. Much as Bassnectar took to dubstep like a duck to water, the halftime style provides a perfect framework for EPROM’s swaggering, low-slung compositions and epic sound design.

His latest EP for Alix Perez’s 1985 Music carries on exactly where previous Shades outings and his recent Samurai EP left off; earth-shattering basslines, weird harmonics, glitchy designs and punchy percussion. Whether it’s on the stalking vibrations of Drone Warfare or the fuzzed out, wonked-up riddims of Raw Data this EP is just straight hench for the entirety of it’s 14 minute duration. Check it out below and hit up the label store to grab it on vinyl or digital right now.

Samurai Breaks – Boss Battle [Tsunami Bass Weight]

Samurai Breaks has been a busy man this year; between building up the Tsunami Bass Weight imprint alongside label partner VYKing and dropping releases for Plush, Halogen Music, Electrikal, Fragmented and more, 2017 has given us lots of output from the English-born, Prague-based producer. Between all of that he’s also found time to write his debut album, the Boss Battle LP, which dropped on Tsunami Bass Weight last month.

The album sees Sam honing in on the heavyweight halftime sound he’s explored on some of his other recent releases, taking cues from the likes of Ivy Lab and Signs with sparse beats, hints of trap and monsterous neuro-influenced basslines the order of the day. The album is at it’s best when it combines the head-nodding quality of a punchy halftime drum rhythm and a simple but weighty bassline with playful glitchiness, as on LP hightlight Special Delivery.

It’s not all sluggers though; rapid-fire breaks come into play on the chaotic Devil’s Lettuce and the antagonistically named Swivel, switching things up from the slower and more hip-hop influenced mainstays elsewhere on the record. Overall this is an impressive body of work – while perhaps not as varied as it could be it is still well worth a listen. Halftime bassheads, this one’s for you. Check out the clips below and hit up Bandcamp to grab a copy now.

Emperor – Dispositions – The Remixes [Critical]

Material from Emperor’s recent Dispositions LP gets the remix treatment on the latest release from Critical, and true to form the label have delivered a really interesting selection for the EP. For our money you should just ignore the Phace remix; as weighty as it is it’s predictable fare and far from the most interesting work we’ve heard from the German neuro powerhouse.

Klax on the other hand have absolutely excelled themselves with their remix of Made of Light, taking the original’s moody vocal and setting it to a halftime beat punctuated with grime-tinged synth swells and some serious bassweight. This one positively swaggers along as the synth lines stalk through the mix, and the energy levels are kept high despite the plodding drum pace; top notch mid-set switch-up material.

Ivy Lab are next up and once again on a half time flex, flipping Jounce around from a full roll neuro workout into a hypnotic, bouncing slice of intergalactic hip-hop that just oozes character. Smooth melodies and warm low end reverberations make for a serious head-nodder. Last up we’re treated to the softest of renditions as Made of Light gets the accoustic treatment, stripped back to nothing but Solah’s beautiful vocal and a moving piano line. Something a little different from the usual Emperor material! Check out the clips below and hit up the Critical Store to grab the EP on vinyl or digital now.
