Noisia – Purpose EP [Vision]

It’s difficult to imagine that anyone can have missed this given the massive pre-release hype via UKF, Noisia’s Facebook feed and many other channels, but in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks and haven’t heard the news, Noisia are back with a brand new EP of hefty neurofunk.

Featuring 8 tracks including new collaborations with Phace, Prolix and Evol Intent, the tunes all display the classic Noisia hallmarks of incredible sound design, monstrous bass and general production sheen. Some of the more dancefloor-oriented tracks like Asteroids and Stamp Out veer close to jump up territory, prioritising bass heft over notions of subtlety, but thankfully this isn’t the case everywhere. Evol Intent collab Long Gone proves surprisingly restrained, with atmospheric pads providing just as much of the tune’s character as the heavy snares and bass swells.

Other highlights come on the eerie techstep groove of Leopard Slug, the predictably robotic but nonetheless immensely satisfying workout of Purpose with Phace and the hefty reese and rolling breaks of Running Blind, which brings back warm memories of the classic 2005 era neuro sound which made Noisia stars of the scene. Overall if you like it hard and heavy you can’t go wrong with the Dutch legends! The release is out now on Beatport and you can pre-order a rather deluxe 4xLP package direct from Noisia’s own store – watch out for this shipping later in the month.

February Mixtape Roundup

Our favourite mixes this month span the range of D&B sounds from banging to experimental and everything in between. Kid Drama follows up his excellent Heart Drive podcasts with a mix for Hyp taking in his 170 sounds both old and new and keeping things deep and unusual as ever.

Tokyo Prose have mixed the latest volume of the Sun & Bass podcast series and deliver a deep, rolling mix featuring their own productions alongside tunes from the likes of Calibre, Mutt and Ivy Lab.

Automate return with podcast number 30 featuring a belting tech selection from Midlands DJ/Producer Critical Error.

Evol Intent’s Gigantor is on the controls for the second in their new Evolcast podcast series with a selection of typically up-front, no nonsense dancefloor neurofunk. Some nice new VIPs and mashups in here!

French D&B crew Vandal serve up the latest edition of their podcast with a storming mix from Miss Leia featuring heavy tunes from the likes of Mindscape, Audio, Prolix and Nickbee.

Last but by no means least Mako, DLR & Villem celebrate their recent release for Metalheadz with a tidy 30 minute mix featuring tracks from the trio and other members of the Metalheadz/Utopia/Warm Communications family. Deeper beats!

February Freebies

With so many great free tunes kicking about this month we thought we’d round up a few of our favourites here at the Dojo. So in no particular order…

Evol Intent continue their epic series of Throwback Thursday free giveaways with a fan favourite, never released dubplate from way back in 2002! The Ladies has achieved some fame over the years via Soulseek/Youtube and is now finally available to download in newly remastered glory. Girly vocals and tough amens have never sounded so good.

CIA Records pre-empt their big plans for 2014 with a free tasty in the form of Total Science, S.P.Y & System’s Sleight of Hand, a tasty roller with all the polish you’d expect from this sort of collab. Check it out below and give the CIA Facebook a like to download.

Finally Quantax and Facing Jinx have teamed up to give us the latter’s remix of the former’s Untold. Stripped back riddims, grimey bass and soft, soulful pads come together nicely on this one.

Noisia – Hyenas / The Liquid [Vision]

Noisia’s Vision imprint has been relatively quiet since the release of The Upbeats excellent Primitive Technique (which has finally dropped on vinyl for the wax enthusiasts out there, incidentally). It seems the boys have been hard at work in the studio though, both on their I Am Legion collaboration and some new neurofunk masterworks. The label’s latest sees the dutch trio team up first with Calyx & Teebee for Hyenas and then with US hardstep dons Evol Intent for The Liquid.

Calyx & Teebee’s signature punchy sound shines through on the A side with intricate drum work and a catchy synth lead taking centre stage. Over on the flip EI’s knack for glitchy touches combines with some epic synth work and a truly monstrous bassline to create a tune that you can expect to hear rewound over and over again in the next few weeks. Huge just doesn’t even cover this!

Watch out for the release dropping exclusively via Beatport from October 7th with vinyl and other digital stores to follow on the 21st.

Evol Intent & Ewun – 8 Bit Bitch [Free Download]

Evol Intent continue their excellent run of free “throwback Thursday” giveaways with a remaster of Ewun collab 8 Bit Bitch. While the Spor remix (which featured on the Era Of Diversion LP) added a certain amount of extra production quality and some rather tastier bass, the original still has plenty of glitchy charm eight years on from it’s original release on Evol Intent Recordings. Check it out and grab a free download below!

Evol Intent – Suicide [Free Download!]

Originally released back in 2005 of the Guerilla Warfare compilation on Renegade Hardware, today’s freebie is a nice little remaster of Evol Intent’s classic darkstep belter Suicide. Tough amens, vicious bass stabs, a healthy dose of glitch and a nicely acid-tinged lead combine to give this tune every bit as much edge as it had eight years ago. Check it out and grab yourself a free download below!
