Neonlight – Power Hour EP [Lifted Music]

Neonlight return to Lifted Music with another EP of their signature synth-led, 80s tinged drum & bass…putting the funk back into neurofunk, one might say. The EP kicks off with Power Hour, a track which rides high on a current of appropriately powerful and catchy melody underpinned with hefty sub and high impact drum lines.

Next up comes Basso Continuo, which sees faintly salsa-ish rhythms on the intro giving way to a driving sub bass line decorated nicely with FX and synth flourishes, and topped off with a nice little synth melody just before the breakdown which sounds very Castlevania-esque. The 8-bit tinged sound which Neonlight pursue continues to endear their work to me!

Finally we’re treated to the “Rock & Roll Edit” of Sprech Funk, which proves to be a no-nonsense slice of precise, rolling tech-funk. Three cheers for German engineering! Check out the clips below and grab the EP from your favourite digital outlet now!

In The Mix…Jade [Eatbrain]

Brand new Eatbrain dubs from Telekinesis and Teddy Killerz feature alongside new beats and classic tracks from the likes of Noisia, Black Sun Empire, Dom & Roland, Neonlight and Bad Company. Dark and nasty all the way, just how we like it!

Get to Know…Lifted Music

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere since 2006 it seems unlikely that you won’t have heard of Lifted Music. Starting early with a succession of classic releases from the likes of Spor, Evol Intent Ewun and Apex, the label had a quiet patch for a bit but has recently had all guns blazing once again with a slew of great releases over the last few months and plenty more to come.

Late last year the label came out with a seriously tidy EP in the form of From Roots To Wings. Featuring massive, futuristic tech-funk from Aeph, Memtrix, Neonlight, Receptor & Infuze, the release was all about dancefloor stompage and it delivered that by the spades.

Not content with that, Lifted squeezed out a 4 track EP from Neonlight just before Christmas with more heavy yet melodic tunes. Computer Music in particular has barely left my sets recently.

Not content with dominating the drum & bass scene, Lifted have just dropped a high quality Dubstep release from Meta with his second EP for their Lifted Dub arm. Delivering far more melody and production value than much of the over-saturated 140 BPM market but still retaining that futuristic Lifted sound, this is definitely worth a look.

Just in case you needed any further encouragement, here’s a classic from the back catalogue, Spor’s Knock You Down from LFTD001. Check it out, and grab the releases from the Lifted Store!

Black Sun Empire – From The Shadows [BSE]

While Dutch drum & bass veterans Black Sun Empire have certainly been busy gigging and organising their Blackout nights (which have recently touched down in the UK, to great success) new music from the trio has been fairly thin on the ground since their last album Lights and Wires. Apparently the boys have been busy and just not telling anyone though, as the emergence of the sampler for their 5th album From The Shadows shows.

More of a tease than a true show of new material, the sampler nonetheless showcases some seriously stomping remixes of tracks from Lights by the likes of Jade, Neonlight, Mindspace and Telekinesis. If you like your drum & bass big, bad and thoroughly growling then look no further than this!

In The Mix… Mindscape

Mixtape banter this week comes courtesy of Hungarian Drum’n’bass producer Mindscape via fellow Hungarian Jade‘s Eatbrain label. Spanning 29 tracks in just under an hour, this is wall to wall neurofunk DnB at it’s finest, with brand new dubs from the likes of Black Sun Empire, Gridlok, Cause4Concern, Neonlight, S.P.Y, Prolix and The Upbeats. Tight rolling breakbeats and growling bass all the way. Check it out below!
