Not content with mighty releases from Phil Tangent and DRS, Soul:R are back with more, this time from eclectic producer Lynx who delivers a great little 12″. Balloons is a half stepper with tons of character, cheeky bleeps and bloops ambling through the tune, but for me it’s all about the deep roller on the flip Passing Time.
Watch out for this one dropping on Soul:R on Decmber 17th!
Swedish Drum & Bass maestro Seba is winding up to release his latest album on his own Secret Operations label, and in preparation he’s got a 12″ sampler in the works. Too Much Too Soon delivers a nice slice of warm vocal driven liquid but for me it’s all about the crisp snares and acid style bass of Say You Love Me. Watch out for the release on December 17th!
Soul:R have had a brilliant year and are aiming to round it off in style with their last few singles, one of which comes from the very talented Phil Tangent. Phil delivers deep vibes throughout, from the ethereal synths and rolling breakbeats of Restitution on the A side to the slightly grittier vibes of Squaring The Circle on the flip, featuring a cheeky vocal sample of none other than Bjork!
Look out for this one dropping December 10th on Soul:R.
Cause4Concern have been bashing out top notch techstep bangers on the Drum & Bass scene for well over a decade but this latest release on their own label proves they haven’t even remotely lost their touch.
A side Jinx brings the fire in classic techstep style with a signature C4C warping bassline layered over a stomping drum beat. This is dancefloor slaying material and no mistake. Flipside Lowlife doesn’t disappoint either with hard hitting kicks and skittering snares giving the track tons of movement. Look out for this one on the 31st of December!
IM:LTD‘s latest release sees Gerwin coming in with two genuinely interesting slices of D&B that occupy a strange halfway house between styles, merging the growling basslines of techstep with the soulful melodies of deep liquid. It shouldn’t work, but it does! Opener Lying Portraits sees Gerwin team up with Nuage and MC 2Shy, who excels himself with a deep, well written rap vocal (which makes a change from the hordes of average gritty rhymes in D&B right now). Over on the flip Gerwin utilises a nice R&B sample to build the track before the growling bassline takes over.
Look out for this one at all good digital outlets from December 10th!
The release of new material on Total Science‘s CIA Records imprint is always a pleasure, with the boys always keeping the quality ridiculously high and only putting out releases when they’re good and ready. This latest LP (the sequel to Tuned In some eleven years on) showcases that quality from a variety of artists across pretty much all the styles of Drum & Bass, and even among a year of so many LP releases shines through as a great album.
The LP delivers deeper tracks like Lenzman’s remix of Past Lives and the beautiful Stolen Moments from Riya & Zero T alongside techier numbers from the likes of Spirit, 8-Bits & Q-Project and Beta 2, along with some standout leftfield drumwork from Fracture on The Breaks. You can stream a few of my favourites below, so check it out and go grab yourself a copy from your favourite store!
Brand new label REAL-IGION brings a quality first release from Decimal Bass & Harvest. A side Is It Possible is all about the clattering tom-tom lines which bring a really unique vibe to the track, while Make Me Feel takes a similar idea but brings it down to a half-step pace with some seriously growling bass behind it. This label is definitely one to keep an eye on for 2013!
