CIA 20 LP Sampler

CIA mark 20 years in the game with a massive new LP, and ahead of the main event there’s a cracking sampler just out featuring some top tracks from familiar label names.

DLR jumps in on the remix for Q Project’s anthemic Champion Sound, retaining the original’s distinctive synth hook but pairing it with an appropriately hefty selection of beats and bass for the current era of D&B. Sure fire dancefloor weapon!

Elsewhere Calibre delivers a characteristically smooth pinao-led roller in the form of Under Bars, and label dons Total Science throw down some fine break choppage on the dub-tinged Respect Due. There’s also a cheeky second remix of Champion Sound with DLR swapping out the beefy modern tech underpinnings of the 2016 remix for something a bit more jungle-y. Tasty stuff! Check out the clips below and hit up the CIA Bandcamp to grab this on vinyl or digital right now.

Classic Track: Zinc – Casino Royale

R-147684-1105272891.jpg

It’s been a while since we found time for a Thursday classic track but it’s definitely long overdue, so with the sun shining here at Dojo HQ we’re digging in the DJ Zinc vaults for a look back at 2001 classic Casino Royale.

Featuring that signature Zinc rolling break and simple but effective garage-style bassline, this is just a big warm joyous slice of golden era D&B that might lack the complexity of newer tunes but nails the vibe perfectly. It’s a really recognisable number too and still a great choice for a feel-good set closer. We miss you Zinc…come back to D&B please!

Detboi – Joyride EP [Metalheadz]

Before we proceed, if by some anomaly you haven’t heard Special Request’s sublime 2013 jungle revival LP Soul Music then you need to stop reading right now and go and listen to it. No really. Off you go.

Joking aside, the 2013 arrival of Paul Woolford’s Special Request alias saw new life being inserted into the jungle sound, as the classic vibe and spirit of 90s rave culture were combined with the power of the modern mixdown to create something that transcended mere nostalgia. These tracks are unmistakeably informed by jungle, but melded into something slightly different, and not just because of the obviously lower tempo of most of the productions.

Enter Detboi, much championed by Woolford and clearly tapping into the same vein with his releases for the likes of Keysound. His latest work for Metalheadz could be his best yet, featuring simple but rich analogue bass, chunky breakbeats, classic samples and tons of atmosphere. There isn’t much more that needs to be said honestly; the music more than speaks for itself so check out the clips below and channel your inner 90s raver.

The Joyride EP is out now at the Metalheadz store.

DNB Dojo Mix Series 35: I Wannabe

MixSeries35_IWannabe

Ukrainian producer I Wannabe joins the Dojo ranks as he delivers the 35th instalment of our exclusive mix series! With releases on Formation, 22:22, Cymbalism and a host of other labels and collaborations with Sunchase among his work, this is a producer with a clear passion and talent for Drum & Bass.

His mix for DNB Dojo takes in everything from jazzy liquid rollers to deep halftime grit, with one eye kept firmly on the dancefloor. Uplifting, summery vibes; yes yes!

As usual you can check out the mix via Soundcloud below or head to YoutubeMixcloud, Hearthis.at or iTunes to stream. You can also grab a download from Google Drive.

Lockjaw – Two Suns / Suffer In Silence [Plasma]

The latest release from Melbourne’s Plasma Audio finds Lockjaw on top form, bringing two top new cuts to the table. Two Suns kicks off with a bright, uplifting build-up before dropping into a crunchy, rolling break. This one’s all in the progression; the main verse evolves constantly every few bars before descending into the bridge and the second drop drum switchups provide a level of detail often lacking in dancefloor neuro.

The ominously titled Suffer In Silence continues that trend for sonic detailing, with some superbly intricate break chopping imbuing the track with enough funk to offset the threatening bass distortions rumbling away underneath. Cracking stuff! Check out the clips below and hit up your favourite store to grab this one right now.

Vromm – Binary Vol. 8 [Critical]

The Binary series has been a mixed bag; the concept of a digital-only series allowing more rapid dissemination of music with less risk is certainly a solid idea for a label of Critical’s size, but (perhaps inevitably) the results have been a little inconsistent. To our mind, the series has been at it’s best when pushing the envelope with more experimental sounds, and that’s exactly where their latest EP from Vromm comes in.

There’s a fair amount of variation to be found in the four tracks on show. Nomad and Motor Hell provide Samurai/Cylon-esque slices of moody halftime which plenty of interesting sonic textures, but the other two tracks are where Vromm really excels himself. Zombie features some fantastically intricate percussion and a really nice second half progression, while star opening track Lake Monsters is a masterclass in sound design, with terrifying effect.

It’s great to see Kasra’s label providing a platform for an emerging artist with a fairly avantgarde sound; we hope to hear more of this kind of thing via Binary in the future, assuming it lasts longer than previous series Modulations. Owneath – Bokomaru EP [Demand]

Demand continue their Selects series with an EP from Ukrainian newcomer Owneath. Channelling the 20/20 LDN halftime sound which Ivy Lab have been championing of late, the vibes are low slung and full of swagger from start to finish.

Deeper cuts Overload and Juku will probably appeal to fans of the grittier breed of halftime, but for us the best outings are to be found on the more hip-hop influenced beats. Title track Bokomaru brings together an infectious hook and a cracking swung drum line for a sparse, crunked out banger, while Pay Me follows a similar line but with a slightly more menacing edge. Gun fingers at the ready!

MZE/IIx – Chi EP [Break The Surface]

Leipzig label Break The Surface are back with a great new EP from multi-identity producer MZE aka IIx, who showcases his take on the halftime sound across four cracking new tracks.

The halftime sound can sometimes be accused of being “deep” to the point of boredom but that’s definitely not the case here; tracks like Dibia and Tsetse have more than enough playful drum syncopation and bassweight to make bodies move in the dance. Even the more groove-led One Six has a hypnotic appeal, bringing in influences from dub and techno for a mesmerizing journey.
