Art of Deception LP [Authentic Music]

Authentic Music are now well and truly back; after a lengthy hiatus from releasing music and a couple of retrospective EP releases, the Czech label returns proper this month with a various artists LP in the form of Art of Deception.

It’s worth noting at this point that I’m not a big fan of compilation LPs. Certain labels have taken in recent years to releasing ever bigger and bigger albums packed with twenty, thirty or even forty tunes loosely bound by rough subgenre and largely lacking in vision or purpose; sure, there are often some good tracks to be found, but who wants to listen through dozens of beats to find the gems? Quality before quantity should be the maxim, but more and more in this ADHD digital age that maxim is being ignored.

Enter Authentic Music, a label that has always striven to provide that all important quality. In the three and a half years of its existence, the imprint has moved slowly but steadily, releasing only tracks which pass the tests of both production sheen and innovation, and thankfully that ethos hasn’t changed for their latest outing.

The slightly old school approach shines through in the release of samplers, a-la vinyl LPs of yesteryear; there might not be wax in the offing, but a handful of tracks have been selected from the main body to lead the pack, and in that fine tradition of samplers they feature some of the LP’s strongest material, with remixes from A-Cray and ArpXP sitting alongside originals from Revaux and Kusp.

Tone-wise most of the album holds true to the Authentic aesthetic; techy vibes fit for the dancefloor but featuring strong sound design and enough of an experimental edge not to be forgettable club fodder. There are some surprises to be found too such as Revaux’s uplifting remix of Mr. Magician and the playful rolling melodies of Dephzac’s sublime Sum Is Wrong.

I could spend time picking out favourites from the selection but with the quality so high you’re better off just listening for yourself. Wicked vibes through and through; hit up Beatport to grab the lot right now.

The Re:Birth EP [Utopia Music]

Utopia Music have had something of a hiatus recently (probably due in no small part to Mako’s extensive work with other labels) but the label is back with a new EP and for the first time they’re going digital only. According to the press release the previous strict vinyl-only release policy is now being relaxed to try and get more of the label’s signings out into the world, so expect to see more digital releases over the coming months.

As usual from the Utopia Camp the tunes are all top quality, but the vibes are even deeper than usual, with the imprint making it’s first forays into halftime D&B. Hydro, War & Mateba go in on 87 with some pretty spooky synths over a chunky back beat, while Coerce serves up floaty, almost ambient business on Merkava.

Israeli producer PLK switches things up with a chunky slice of angular D&B with a techy edge, leaving it to label boss Mako to close things out with a blissful “ReDub” of Sunchase’s previous release for Utopia, Nathennia. The track lives up to it’s name, being entirely dubby and almost entirely unrecognisable from the original.

You can grab these right now from the Utopia store, and if you want more Utopian vibes be sure to check out Hydro & War’s brand new mix for our exclusive mix series!

Sunchase – The Truth EP [Med School]

The latest release from Med School comes from Ukrainian producer Sunchase, who dishes up a fantastic 6-track EP blending deep D&B with chilled out, melodic electronica. Standout moments come on the rolling, minimal and at times glitchy Electrosoul System collaboration Thing, the serene yet techy Kolo with Blu Mar Ten and the spacey, autonomic-esque vibes of Slowly.

The release is up for pre-order at the Hospital Shop and will be dropping on marbled vinyl and digital formats from Feb 23rd, so check out the clips and get your order in!

Sunchase & Detail – Nathnennia / Green Rain [Utopia]

Mako’s Utopia Music delivers another top notch 12″, showcasing yet more proof of the labels refusal to be pigeon-holed to a single style of D&B.

Sunchase steps up first to deliver a super chilled, ethereal piece of 170 that would feel very much at home on Blu Mar Ten music. This one’s up there with Bungle’s recent masterpiece for Soul:R, truly beautiful music.

Over on the flip Detail comes in with a more dancefloor-oriented number, bringing growling low end and hefty kick drums, punctuated with double time distorted amen bars to keep the crowd on their toes. Beauty on the A-side…beast on the B-side!

Sunchase – As We Look Remix / Proper Things [22:22]

Sunchase & Nickbee bring the fire for the third release on their 22:22 imprint! First up Teddy Killerz & Malk are let loose on Moving Shadow classic As We Look for a belting new remix which amps things up a bit while retaining the spirit of the original. Over on the flip the pair deliver a nicely off-kilter grimey stepper in the form of Proper Things which moves seamlessly between full and half-step beats.

As a celebration of the release 22:22 have kindly given away their Proper Harder Things refix of the B side which delivers exactly what you’d expect from the title; beats and bass have both been beefed up to the max to deliver a total smasher!
