Q&A – June Miller

Anglo-Dutch duo June Miller have been going from strength to strength over the last few years, from strong beginnings on releases for Horizons and Inneractive, through tunes for Commercial Suicide and out into their recent signing to Andy C’s RAM Records. They’re kicking off 2014 with a bang with a brand new 12″, so we caught up with them for a quick Q&A about the release, their studio dynamic and their plans for the coming year.

DNB Dojo: The new 12″ is sounding sick! Upfront dancefloor business on the A-side and dark funk on the flip. Can you tell us a bit about how the tunes came together?

June Miller: Thank you! Empathy is all about the bassline and pads. We wanted something with a big bassline but still uplifting. We’ve been looking for vocalists but in the end we decided to just do it ourselves. 🙂 We wrote Operation Ivy a long time ago and recently gave it an update. It’s one of those tunes we enjoy making because of all the small details going on.

DD: Operation Ivy sounds like a reference to the punk band, especially with the bass sound you’ve employed. Is that part of the JM musical heritage? Any other influences you’d like to tell us about?

JM: Yes, that’s exactly what we’re referencing 🙂 We’ve played in punk bands when we were younger and we still like to listen to punk music. I think all the music we listen to is somehow incorporated into our own music. It might not be that obvious all the time but, for example, the energy and dynamics in punk rock is really important for us and we always try to make our music intense and energetic as well. It’s the same for playing live – it’s sort of a way to get all our energy out.

DD: You’ve moved from strength to strength over the last couple of years with releases on RAM, without a doubt one of the biggest labels in the game. How does it feel to be up there with legends like Andy C? Do you find it comes with any extra pressure?

JM: Well, we’re always trying to reinvent ourselves, trying to improve our own music, so being on RAM doesn’t really change the way we approach music. I think our strength is our versatility and that keeps things interesting and unpredictable. When we signed to RAM, it felt perfect for us because RAM, as well as Andy C, is a great example of the whole spectrum of drum and bass. We don’t have to pigeonhole ourselves.

DD: What’s the June Miller dynamic in the studio? Do you have set roles when writing tunes, or is it pretty fluid?

JM: We don’t really have a specific role. Usually one of us comes up with a rough idea for a tune and then we get together and make decisions about where we want to take it. We haven’t got the time to do everything together, so whenever we’re both in the studio we’ll be working on making creative choices in a tune. You don’t wanna sit in a studio together tweaking a snare for four hours. 🙂

DD: Anything in the pipeline for 2014 that you’d like to tell us about?

JM: We’ve just started working on ideas for an album which is quite fun but that’s just in the early stages. Right now we’re concentrating on making singles. We’ve finished two tunes with Nymfo and did some deeper stuff as well.

Optiv & BTK – Zero Tolerance / Tapout [Dispatch Recordings]

Optiv & BTK return to Dispatch Recordings with a pair of stomping techy beats sure to move a few floors over the coming months. Tapout provides classic rolling techstep vibes in the signature Optiv & BTK style, but the real star of the show is Zero Tolerance, cooking things up with a skittering jungle-style beat and a deadly bass riff.

Check out the clips below and watch out for the release dropping from January 13th.

Alaska – Jasheri / Zoranine [Arctic Music]

Paradox kicks off the year with a slice of beautiful, atmospheric drumfunk under his Alaska moniker. Jasheri is truly lush, soaring strings and understated sub-bass punctuated by crisp, elegant drum breaks which while heavily syncopated convey no sense of impatience whatsoever. Despite the tempo, this is music to lose yourself in, not music to lose it to.

Zoranine heads for even deeper territory, swapping the uplifting synths of the A side for equally lush but slightly more melancholy tones. Flute, oboe, xylophone and subtle touches of guitar all play into a true musical masterpiece, laid out to a downtempo back beat.

As usual with Paradox’s releases you can pick this up on beautiful limited edition snow-white vinyl, available to pre-order now from Surus. Watch out for the release dropping from January 10th.

Matt McGowan – Over Zero / The Demon [Brain Network]

BNRDIGI016

Matt McGowan returns to Brain Network with another top-notch release showcasing his impressive talents for progressive neurofunk. Over Zero kicks off with a ton of atmosphere on the intro, building the tension with brooding synths and a hip-hop style beat as the moving bassline starts to rise into the mix. The inevitable kick-drum crescendo lifts us into a meaty drop as twin basslines fight back and forth over the rolling beats before giving way to more melodic elements; epic stuff!

The Demon provides ample B-side relief with a more straight-forward balls to the wall composition – heavy beats, eerie pads and a bassline which is frankly just menacing. If you’re looking for subtlety you’ll find little of it here, but if you’re looking for dancefloor danger you’ll find it in spades.

With beats like these coming out of the studio McGowan is clearly one to watch for 2014! Check out the clips below and watch out for the release dropping via Beatport from Jan 6th and elsewhere from the 20th!

Skepsis – Wicked Devil [Transmission Audio]

Leeds label Transmission Audio return with their third release featuring beats from Victim and Skepsis. Victim delivers a tight, detailed techy roller on the A side but for me it’s all about Skepsis’ Wicked Devil on the flip; possibly the most savage tune I have heard from 2013’s releases, falling short of only Billain’s Boogie. Make no mistake, this is a relentless dancefloor pulverising machine! Check out the beats below and grab a copy from your favourite digital outlet now!

In The Mix…Heart Drive

dBridge & Kid Drama (aka Jon Convex) return with the second of their Heart Drive mixes, coyly titled Empathy Reboot. Unlike previous installment Aut0mated L0ve, this time the tracklist is kept entirely secret…we’re guessing the tunes will surface over the coming months, but who can tell? As you’d expect the mix is full of cutting edge experimental beats, ranging from dark and growling to deep and soulful. Check it out below and grab yourself a free download!

Lockjaw – The Revelation / Cauterise [Lifestyle]

After his storming contribution to Lifestyle’s recent double-A side Canberra’s Lockjaw is back with a full single of his own brand of warped neurofunk beats. The Revelation opens fire with a full-filtered bass assault of squelching midrange and deft LFO layered over whip-crack snares and meaty kick drums, the overall effect having more swagger than you can shake a stick at.

Cauterise sees Harlequin MC adding vocals to the mix, with a helter skelter mix of hi-hats and the sort of snares that punch you in the chest. The tune breaks down to almost nothing in the bridge, building tension before round two of bass and full tempo breaks touches down at full pelt. Truly a dangerous tune! Check out the clips below and head to your favourite digital outlet to grab a copy now.
