Kolectiv – Immortalis EP [Diffrent Music]

Diffrent are back with another essential release for those of you who like your D&B on the leftfield end of the spectrum. Kolectiv return to the label after their contribution to last year’s Giraffe LP with their first dedicated release and they’ve brought their A game to the table.

Lead track Immortalis blends influences from hip-hop and footwork with grimey D&B bass and twisted vocals for a crisp, detailed drum workout. Make Me sees Diffrent boss Dexta join the trio for more detailed percussion edits alongside squelchy bass vibrations and a vocal cut that sounds like it was lifted from a classic rave 12″.

Sleeper Cell brings some jazzy influences to the table alongside a militant kick-led beat and a dark, stabbing bassline that should provoke a few screwfaces in the dance. Last but not least for the digital release Kolectiv team up with Mauoq for a hard, nasty slice of dark D&B appropriately titled Killer Instinct; bleak, menacing stuff here.

You can pre-order the album on CD (with two exclusive bonus tracks) from the Diffrent Store now, with discs shipping from November 10th; digital will follow on Juno from the 17th and everywhere else from the 24th.

Andy Pain & Z-Connection – Take It / Horizon [Diffrent Music]

Diffrent continue their quest to bring weird new sonic manipulations into the world with a pair of new beats from frequent collaborators Andy Pain & Z-Connection. Andy Pain goes in on the slouching swing of Horizon, drawing on hip-hop and deep, downtempo electronica for a soft, shuffling beauty of a track.

Z-Connection amps things up on the flip, bringing together frantic jungle-breaks with a hint of the footwork aesthetic and some rapid fire vocal chop ups. Fans of Fracture’s recent output will love this one. Check out the beats below and head over to the Diffrent bandcamp to pre-order a copy; the release drops there from September 27th with full digital release to follow on October 6th.

Fixate – Pum Pum / System Malfunction [Diffrent Music]

Diffrent continue their excellent trend for pushing the boundaries of 170BPM music with a weird and wonderful new single from Fixate. Pum Pum melts down soca, ragga and dub influences into an infectious head nodder driven along by it’s hypnotic and hyperactive vocal cut. Pum-puppa-pum-pum-puppa-pum!

System Malfunction on the flip explores similar drum patterns and repetitive elements, with a melodic rather than vocal sample taking centre stage to provide the soundtrack to a crazy rave in someone’s mainframe. Pure D&B heads will doubtless hate it, but that’s just how the Giraffe-steppers roll. Check out the clips below and grab yourself a copy from the Diffrent store now!

Fathom Audio – Promises [Diffrent]

Fathom Audio have brought some seriously sinister vibes on their latest release for Diffrent Music. Minimal drum beats and a twinkling high end melody combine with some seriously dirty bass stabs that are reminiscent of early Photek tunes like Sidewinder to make Promises a really interesting slice of D&B.

Over on the flip Ridges actually delivers a more upbeat, cinematic number, with rising arpeggiated melodies and swelling synth bursts used to great effect over glitchy drum lines to deliver a soulful tune. Definitely more armchair than dancefloor, and all the better for it!

Watch out for the full release on September 3rd.
