Atic – Tuff Times EP [Free Love Digi]

Attentive readers may remember some coverage last year of Denver producer Atic‘s releases for Free Love Digi, which impressed us with a rolling techstep vibe. A year on, Atic is back with a six track EP for FLD featuring some tasty new tunes.

The work here brings to mind the likes of DLR and Mako, melding techstep heft with the more musical side of D&B to create tracks that balance atmosphere and dancefloor sensibilities to a very pleasing end. Favourite moments here at the dojo came on Blue MountainCritical Sound and Juil but the whole EP is well worth a listen. Check out the clips below and grab this one from Beatport right now – full release follows from June 15th.

Goreteks – Secrets EP [Free Love Digi]

If you like your D&B grimey and militant, pay close attention! Goreteks, another of Denver’s rising crop of D&B production outfits, bring their wares to Quentin Hiatus’s Free Love Digi imprint and the EP is deadly from start to finish.

No Mercy kicks things off with a stomping halftime beat full of hard snares and cheeky drum fills, while the filtered bass roams in and out of the mix in an entirely threatening fashion. Silence is Golden ups the ante, showering down kicks and snares amongst the sea of dubbed out echoes and distorted bass. This one recalls some of SPKTRM’s best material, and it sounds like the soundtrack to a distopian warzone, brutal business.

Secrets continues the menacing vibe; shades of Amit can be heard here, but with extra grit and angst. The percussion fills on this one really make the track, and the use of space makes the composition all the more powerful. Last but not least, Louder dials back the aggression a little for a tribal, echoing exploration with plenty of dubby twists and turns and a general air of simmering danger.

It’s been some time since producers I’ve never heard have impressed me this much on a first listen. Check out the clips below and go pick this one up now!

Quentin Hiatus – Chocolate Cosmos EP [Free Love Digi]

Free Love Digi continue their steady onslaught of releases with a fresh EP from label boss Quentin Hiatus. Pushing the boundaries as ever, Quentin explores more weird and wonderful takes on the 170BPM sound. The Struggle melts down influences from techno and beyond for a psychedelic and potent slice of 4×4 D&B, while Chocolate Cosmos hits those slouching, hip-hop style halftime riddims that Mr Hiatus does so well.

One Way Or Another goes into deep space, harnessing the power of dub for a tripped out, reverb drenched jam. Last but not least, Understatement ups the ante a bit with angular percussion and an ominous, robotic vibe. Check out the clips below and watch out for this dropping at all good digital outlets from Feb 23rd.

Generous man that he is Quentin is also giving away a nice little freebie to promote the EP in the form of Lucy. Treading similar ground to The Struggle, this one’s got more than a hint of techno to it; check it out and grab a free download from Soundcloud.

Nutekk & KnowKontrol – Let You Go [Free Love Digi]

FLD continue to push the boundaries of the 170BPM sound with a new single from Nutekk & KnowKontrol. The Lithuanian producer blends tough drum beats with floating synth lines and ethereal vocals to create an entirely unusual take on the established D&B sound. Cinematic vibes! Check out the clips below and grab this one from your favourite digital outlet from Jan 26th.

Ghast – The Drake Equation EP [Free Love Digi]

Free Love Digi bring us yet another essential release, cementing the label’s reputation for cutting edge 170BPM sounds. Nootropics opens the salvo on Ghast’s latest work, showing a clever progression from the raging tech of the drop into the mellower and more atmospheric tones of the second half of the track. Retrovertigo sees this atmosphere flowing onwards into glitchy, half-time drums and deep, rich synth leads and atmospheres.

The Drake Equation brings the tone to a darker place again, with creepy synths and frenetic, jungle-infused drums clattering away as the tune drives along. Last but not least Vice Versa brings together twisted jazz licks, eastern vocal cut ups and a slouching, hip-hop-ish beat for the EP’s most “far out” track. Truly innovative stuff. Check out the clips below and grab this from your favourite digital store from December 1st.

Fade – Kolokol / Feed The Beast [Free Love Digi]

Free Love Digi return with an absolutely monstrous single from Ukranian badman Fade. Kolokol brings the classic neurofunk vibes with a heavy break and an absolutely tearing reese line, with atmospheric pads and bleepy melodies providing the icing on a dirty bass-laden cake.

Feed The Beast dials things back a notch but keeps the energy levels rolling along, with morphing bass and a ton of deft little percussion edits for another tidy tech workout. Anyone who needed convincing of Fade’s abilities in the studio needs look no further than this! Check out the clips below and watch for this one dropping at all good digital stores from November 10th.

Last but by no means least Free Love Digi have not one but *two* great new freebies; first up there’s a dark roller from Kaset to celebrate his new single for the label (which is out on Monday), and label bossman Quentin Hiatus is giving away a collaboration with Thomas B and Ghast which pushes the boundaries at the edge of the 170BPM envelope. Once again downloads available via the Soundcloud players below.

Kaset – Final Stop / Surface [Free Love Digi]

Free Love Digi’s latest offering from Denver producer Kaset touches down with a bang. Final Stop proves a no-nonsense dancefloor roller; crisp breaks, hefty sub and some nice bass distortion keep the tune moving along at quite a pace.

Over on the flip Surface takes the energy down a notch and cranks up the atmosphere. More frenetic breaks drive the tune along as creepy pads wash over the tune and a moving, almost talkative bassline lends the tune some bite. A tidy balance of dancefloor sensibilities and musical flourish – nice. Check out the clips below and grab this one from your favourite online store from October 6th.

Q&A – BRKCHK [fld.Study]

BRKCHK’s latest work for Free Love Digi’s fld.Study sister-label rather piqued our interest here at the Dojo, exploring as it does the mellower end of D&B without falling into obvious liquid tropes. With that in mind, it seemed only right to pick the man’s brains for some insight into his take on the 170BPM sound.

Hex – Slugproof [Free Love Digi]

Dojo’s very own Hex sneaks another tune out via Quentin Hiatus’s Free Love Digi imprint. Slugproof brings together sharp breaks, bouncy bass and a cheeky vocal sample for a tune with plenty of roll and a side helping of swagger. 10 points if you can spot the classic rap group sampled! Check it out below and grab yourself a free download via the FLD Soundcloud.
