Genotype – Lessons In Depth EP [Samurai Music]

The legendary Genotype brings his signature brand of deep, futuristic jungle to Samurai Music with an EP that oozes character and atmosphere. From the natural, tribal percussion and dubby hip-hop vibe of Jam That Feel through the oddly cheery classical flourishes of the intro to Financial War and out into the bleak minimalism of Creative Elements, the EP largely defies genre conventions and eschews traditional structures in favour of delivering beats aimed at your head and your heart.

Even when we’re in more familiar D&B territory on The Day After The Night the quality and sound design is absolutely breathtaking, and the track retains a left-field vibe, harking back to old Hardware B-sides. Definitely one for the deep heads, but also possibly the best thing Genotype has ever made…look out for this one on vinyl and digital from June 24th.

Subtension – Black Haze [Samurai Music]

Samurai Music return with another of their absolutely beautiful marbled 12″s, this time featuring a stunning selection of beats from Slovakian producer SubtensionBlack Haze builds tension masterfully with filter sweeps on the break proving a massive tease before the absolutely epic drop; this is one of the dirtiest tunes I’ve heard so far this year, and the bass engineering on show is impressive.

Changes over on the flip heads for more straightforward roller territory but fear not, this is by no means a mundane tune. Intricate percussion and growling bass swells combine for a tune that’s packed full of character and punch. Last but not least, the digital package features an exclusive 3rd track Inner Man. Dropping things down to a half-step tempo and adding a heavy swing to the beat on the first half of the tune before bringing things up to full tempo with a skittering break in the second half, something tells me this one will be punctuating my sets nicely over the next few months.

Check out the audio below and pre-order your copy from the Samurai Surus store, full release coming June 3rd.

In The Mix…Om Unit & DK

Ever since his rather excellent release for Civil Music came out I’ve been keeping a close eye on Om Unit‘s 170BPM explorations, and his latest mix for the esteemed Solid Steel Radio sessions run by Ninja Tune delivers the goods nicely. Om Unit goes in deep for part 1 of the show with sublime cuts from himself, Fracture, Escher, ASC and Phaeleh; 170BPM vibes, but definitely not as you usually hear it. Half step and footwork influenced beats are the order of the day here.

For part 2 DK throws all kinds of different beats into the mix with tunes from Space Dimension Controller and Machinedrum sitting alongside tracks from Bonobo; a truly diverse selection. So if you’re looking for something a wee bit different, check out the mix below!

In The Mix…Paradox [Samurai Music]

To celebrate their 20th release from the mighty Paradox, Samurai Music have convinced the man himself to present their official podcast, and he comes correct with a quality selection of drumfunk including both sides of the aforementioned 12″, Crate Logic / Scorpius. With funk drum programming so under-represented on the scene these days, it’s good to see Paradox is still flying the flag and resisting the temptations of other more fashionable sub styles. Check out the mix below and look out for the limited edition marbled 12″ from 25th Feb on the Samurai Surus page.
