Children of Our Stars – Flanell Sessions

The beauty of Drum & Bass as a genre has always been the variety of styles and influences that can fit within its scope – united by tempo and perhaps drum patterns but otherwise hugely varied. Munich duo Children of Our Stars certainly exemplify that ethos, bringing strong influences from orchestral music and singer-songwriter territory and blending them with the familiar structures and 170 rhythms we know and love.

The pair have just dropped their debut LP and the resulting eleven track effort shows off their talent for soulful, evocative melodies and enthralling musical journeys. The use of live vocals and instrumentation really lends a natural edge to their sound, providing a welcome antidote to the sometimes overly digital sound of Drum & Bass in 2021.

As for the vibes, the tracks are uplifting, beautiful and engaging from start to finish, with particular highlights coming on Home, Take Us Back and First Snow. Check out the clips below and hit up Bandcamp or Spotify to buy/stream Flanell Sessions right now, and if you can’t get enough soulful vocal D&B then keep an eye out for an EP from Children of Our Stars on DNBB Records very soon.

Crash Comet – Untold Stories EP [Invasion]

Crash Comet’s latest EP for Invasion Recordings fills a niche that we haven’t heard anyone occupy since LA Artist Eighth Moon‘s releases last year; truly exuberant and unpretentious music, driven almost entirely by melody. Most of the liquid D&B released today either falls into the “dancefloor” category which is aiming for a very specific kind of club euphoria, or the “deep” category, which while often excellent tends towards a more subdued sound in search of subtlety.

The Untold Stories EP fits neither of these categories; while joyous and upbeat, this is nowhere near as maximal and pop-tinged as the “hands in the air” vibe of club liquid mainstays, nor is it as melancholy as much of the deeper end of liquid. There is an emotional range here, and a soft beauty, but also a a slightly child-like, almost naive feel to the tracks; the bright beats and soaring melodies feel untouched by cynicism, pure and elegant in their positivity.

While doubtless not to everyone’s taste, we fell instantly in love with the simple charm of the four tracks on show here. If you need a pick-me-up on a cold winter’s day, this might just hit the spot; check out the clips below and hit up Juno to grab a copy right now.

Premiere: Radicall – Something More

Super smooth liquid vibes on today’s exclusive as new York label Terra Firma present their second release from Polish producer Radicall! Something More combines hints of jazz and a catchy hip-hop style sample hook with a familiar rolling breakbeat for an effortlessly euphoric ride. Tasty stuff; look out for the release at all good digital stores from April 5th.

Loz Contreras – The Nicked Technics EP

We got some sad news earlier this week – liquid producer Loz Contreras was the unfortunate victim of theft outside his flat in Leeds, and has had his Technics 1210s and mixer stolen from the boot of his car. His flatmate has started an appeal to raise the cash to buy new equipment for Loz, and the man himself has generously offered to give away an EP of his hottest dubs to anyone kind enough to chip in. If you’re looking for uplifting liquid rollers it doesn’t get much better than the tracks on offer here, so check the clips below and head to the GoFundMe page and sling Loz some cash.
