Detboi – Joyride EP [Metalheadz]

Before we proceed, if by some anomaly you haven’t heard Special Request’s sublime 2013 jungle revival LP Soul Music then you need to stop reading right now and go and listen to it. No really. Off you go.

Joking aside, the 2013 arrival of Paul Woolford’s Special Request alias saw new life being inserted into the jungle sound, as the classic vibe and spirit of 90s rave culture were combined with the power of the modern mixdown to create something that transcended mere nostalgia. These tracks are unmistakeably informed by jungle, but melded into something slightly different, and not just because of the obviously lower tempo of most of the productions.

Enter Detboi, much championed by Woolford and clearly tapping into the same vein with his releases for the likes of Keysound. His latest work for Metalheadz could be his best yet, featuring simple but rich analogue bass, chunky breakbeats, classic samples and tons of atmosphere. There isn’t much more that needs to be said honestly; the music more than speaks for itself so check out the clips below and channel your inner 90s raver.

The Joyride EP is out now at the Metalheadz store.

Goldie – Broken Man [Metalheadz]

Metalheadz continue their absolutely stellar run of recent releases with a single from label boss Goldie. Broken Man brings in a heart-wrenching vocal from young soul vocalist Kwabs and generally eschews D&B conventions to focus on a more “song” style composition, with the other sonic elements all serving to lift and empower the vocal in the mix. It definitely won’t be for everyone but for our money this is a cracking piece of music, charged with emotion and not seeking anyone’s approval.

Over on the flip Ivy Lab’s Halogenix delivers a sleek remix that should tick all the requisite boxes for fans of the deep liquid roller, and certainly makes the track a bit more DJ friendly. Expect to hear this reached for late in the night, and possibly the subject of some cheeky double drops with heftier tunes. Top class from Metalheadz once again; check out the clips below and hit up their store to grab it on vinyl or digital now.

Classic Track: Goldie – Timeless

Few producers would have the audacity to call a track Timeless. I’m sure at the time many saw Goldie’s vision as naive, even arrogant, but Timeless has proved to be exactly that; 20 years on from its original release the 20 minute opus is just as breathtaking as it has ever been. Drum & Bass at it’s most epic and cleverly arranged, and still punchy and beautiful despite the obviously 90s production style.

If you’re not already a firm fan of the album this heads up you should be able to find a copy on CD easily enough; better still you can see Goldie performing it live with the Heritage Orchestra in London this July. Between now and then sit back and soak in arguably the best track from one of the genre’s true innovators.
