Blu Mar Ten – Famous Lost Words Remixes: Part 1 [Blu Mar Ten Music]

The first of the Famous Lost Words remix releases touches down with fresh reworks from Break and Frederic Robinson. Break’s name often comes up in discussions of “the best drums in D&B”, and his take on Break It All Apart is a great example of his gift for crisp, punchy breaks. Keeping the soulful vocal and melodies of the original but bolstering them with insistent drums and some tasty filtered bass growls, this is a lovely balance of dancefloor sensibilities and musical beauty.

Frederic Robinson meanwhile applies his unique stylings to Somewhere, dropping the energy for a Bonobo-esque downtempo rework. Shuffling beats, synth swells and Frederic’s gift for soft melody combine as he makes the work his own, and the results are pretty breathtaking. The child-like innocence often heard in his music shines through here, and the vibe is irresistible. More Frederic Robinson releases please Blu Mar Ten!

Break & Fields – Duck For Cover / Reel Funk [Symmetry]

Symmetry Recordings return with a fresh double A side from label regulars Break and Fields. Break goes in on the A side with the rolling charms of Duck For Cover, focusing on groove over the hyperactivity that much of modern Techstep embraces. Hypnotic vibes and tons of atmosphere.

Over on the flip Fields presents his first solo outing for the label with an unusual beat structure, chunky bass textures and tons of little details sprinkled into the mix. This one’s all in the percussion, with bongos punctuating a shuffling, cymbal heavy drum workout.

Dr Meaker – Right Back (Break Remix) [V Recordings]

The ever prolific Break steps up for remix duties on Dr Meaker’s new single Right Back, combining his nack for hefty drums and bass with the soft, soulful vocals and summery melodies of the original. Break returns with the latest release on his Symmetry imprint featuring a quality selection covering all the styles of D&B. Calibre turns in two different remixes of They’re Wrong in his signature smooth liquid style, and DLR gets in the studio with break on the mighty tech destroyer New Design.

Elsewhere NC-17 & KC dish in another big bad slice of tech with the positively militant Slimeville and Break explores his deeper side on jazzy D&B stepper Wondering Why and dubby downtempo outing Dem Babylon. Intrigue 11 [Intrigue Music]

Bristol-based label and club night Intrigue Music celebrate 11 years in the game with a tidy selection of tracks from some of the most well respected names in the game. Highlights come from Break, who remixes The Insiders’ Wonder Why with typical flair, Random Movement who dishes up a smooth jazzy refix of The Insiders’ The Rhythm and Quadrant, Kid Hops & Iris who deliver a masterclass in rolling tech on Don’t Call It Anything.

Xtrah – Lost Time EP [Symmetry]

Xtrah returns to Break’s Symmetry label with a tight selection of techy beats. Lost Time gets things rolling nicely with a gritty vibe and crisp breaks that are nicely offset by an unusually melodic vocal from Codebreaker. Always New sees Break and DRS getting in on the action and the riddim dropping to half-time; this one is as much hip-hop and dub as it is D&B, and fantastic for it too.

Out into the digital only tracks and we’re back to full speed 170 territory; Groove Shadow heads for dark stepper realms while Break’s remix of Cyrax does the dancefloor damage with some serious bass modulation and hefty snare impacts.

Break – Music Is Better [Symmetry]

Hot on the heels of the mighty Steam Train Break drops another essential 12″ on Symmetry. Music Is Better on the A-side hits up that classic Break sweet-spot between tech and liquid that we’ve seen him leverage so well over the years on tracks like Love So True, Slow Down and Winter Sun. Jazzy piano and vocals on the intro give way to a meaty bass drop to give the tune equal parts summer vibes and edge. Liquid with teeth!

Backing things up on the flip the familiar team of Fields, Hydro, Mako & Villem give us Celestine. Crisp drums and soft synths on the intro once again give away to a tasty bassline, though the character is definitely in the infectious percussion rather than the low end, and the little flourishes over the top ice the proverbial cake in style. Look out for these two from August 5th on vinyl and digital!

Break – Steam Train [Symmetry]

In the wake of the excellent The Other Side LP and a seemingly endless series of remixes and collabs for other labels, the ever prolific Break has found time to cook up another doozy for his own Symmetry imprint. Steam Train rolls into the proverbial station with some nice hissing samples, classic chord stabs and a beefy bassline that’s sure to move the crowd.

Over on the flip Detail & Tiiu go in deep with Days Go By. Mournful synths and an echoing, folorn vocal intro the tune before a brooding sub rumble adds the bass weight. Soulful, introspective and brimming over with musicality, the simplicity of the production is what makes this tune; rather than crowding the mix with unnecessary layers, Detail has stripped it back to the bare essentials.

Watch out for these dropping July 15th on vinyl and digital.
